Workshop Cairo University
Refunc conducted a student workshop at Cairo University examining material reuse through pallets and car tires. Participants constructed a pavilion by vertically stacking pallets on edge, establishing structural stability through perpendicular bracing and load distribution. The vertical orientation maximized spatial enclosure while minimizing material volume. Workshop methodology alternated between indoor prototype sessions using tire compression properties for seating typologies and outdoor full-scale assembly. Students analyzed how standardized industrial components, EUR pallets (1200x800mm) and passenger car tires, can be repurposed without material processing. The intervention demonstrated function-shifting principles: allowing existing geometries and structural capacities to determine architectural outcomes rather than imposing predetermined formal agendas.
