Manifesta 9

Just when we thought we’d never work with IBCs again… Commissioned to design a bar, shop, library, wardrobe and public entry space for the Manifesta exhibition, the mine building’s limited daylight necessitated IBC containers as light-emitting architectural elements. Superuse Studios harvested the materials. Listening to the building’s structure, the floor plan designed itself, green containers house the bookshop, blue surfaces define wardrobe and bar functions, red pixel pallet table provides workspace. Semi-darkness becomes functional: color-coded luminescence makes program legible where insufficient natural light exists, transforming containers’ translucent walls into self-illuminating interior infrastructure addressing spatial navigation through illuminated programming.
