New Holland 1302

General Dynamics – St. Petersburg, Russia

Working within New Holland Island’s historic shipyard transformation in St. Petersburg, Refunc explored stacking logics using standardized wooden pallets. Moving three times across the site, the project finally found its position around the local skatepark, where the curved concrete topography guided the creation of differently stacked semicircular pallet walls forming a public stand, bench, and pavilion simultaneously. In Russia, yes might mean no and no is definitely a no – this operational reality shaped the project’s adaptive development. The pallets retained complete recognizability, stacked according to their inherent structural properties rather than imposed geometries, demonstrating function-shifting from horizontal logistics to vertical architectural infrastructure within the 2016 cultural programming of New Holland’s post-industrial site.
