Refunc at Cascoland South Africa

Refunc joined Cascoland’s international team working townships from Cape Town’s New Crossroads through Johannesburg to Durban. Western luxury, transport, tools, budget, provided access local communities lacked. Yet hands and minds collaborated to demonstrate public space transformation using readily available materials. Through practice and experiment, the projects showed how discarded industrial materials could reclaim public territory. The work emphasized direct action over theory—transforming street corners and vacant lots with what townships already contained. Material wasn’t scarce; recognition of its potential was. Each intervention proved that taking over public space requires vision and available resources, though privilege determines who possesses the means to act first.
